So, this is what happens when you let your doggie out to go "potty" at midnight. He comes back to the door looking like he just caught a sea urchin.
One roll of duct tape, two pair of leather gloves, two pair of plyers, one bandana, three low-dose aspirin, and three people = one happy doggie.
After a midnight call to the emergency vet, we decided to tackle the removal of the quills ourselves. She told us everything we needed to know and was happy to share that knowledge in the hopes that we would be the ones up until 2:30 am, not her! After all, she just got done removing them from another dog earlier in the evening. We weren't in any great hurry to shell out $350 to have her do it either! Poor Ty, no anethetic, but he managed. It took Shawn and I both laying on him with his legs and snout duct taped and his eyes blindfolded in order to manage him while Doctor Julia pulled the quills. That husky/greyhound/shepherd mix is one strong dog! The second we finished his tail was a waggin' and all was forgotten.
I'm exhausted. See you all in the morning!

oh!! so not fun for any of you. hope he's feeling better this morning!! we've not ever had a run-in with a porcupine, but a couple of our last potty runs of the night have included being sprayed by a skunk.
Ow, ow, ow! Hopefully he learned his lesson!
Yikes! That gave me the willies. Poor pooch! You are brave to have tackled that job, though. Glad the tail is wagging again.

One caution, we've had a couple of dogs that once they got 'got' by a porcupine never forgot it. And it made them attack them again. And again. And again.
Not fun.
Some of my dogs never had another run-in. I hope your fella is one of the ones with sense.

Are porcupines common outside of your house? I just cannot imagine! Here, the only thing that might be lurking about after dark might be a raccoon or an opossum. But what an adventure you've had! (Hopefully soon not to be repeated)

Thanks everyone for your concern for Ty and for us and for your support :-) It was a harrowing experience. You want so much to do something to relieve his suffering, but you have to make him suffer more in the short term to get them out. I have brave, supportive teens who I am very proud of this morning.
Ty is going in to his vet this afternoon for a check-over and some antibiotics to ward off infection. He is following his usual morning routine of lounging on the deck in the sun!
I was up too early due to a call from the vet and am feeling rather exhausted. I'm sure I won't be much support today on the homeschool front. I suppose we could count last night's events as Zoology and call it a day! ;-)
Kat, I didn't know we had porcupines about! We are at the top of a hill near the end of a dead-end street. There is a lot of undeveloped area surrounding our street, so wildlife is common. We've had deer, a black bear, a raccoon, skunks, opossums, etc, but this is our first experience with a porcupine. It's too bad we didn't get to see him. They are very cute critters. I'm sure Ty wouldn't agree with me right now. ;-)
Susan, I know we have skunks around, but he hasn't had a run-in with one yet. We used to have a collie when the kids were little. He had a skunk adventure, a nice bath in tomato soup, and then a lovely coral colored mane all around his neck afterwards where the tomato stained the white fur! Imagine a big male collie with a lovely pinkish ruff!! He was an embarrasment to all...
oh the poor dog! Wow, hats off to you for doing the job yourself!! I think I would count that as school...
Oh my goodness! I hope he's doing ok. That would make my kids cry.

hope all is well today. And believe it or not, I really can picture a pink ruffed collie. My childhood dog was a tri-colored collie, and yes, she also had a skunk run-in. Altho, somehow the pink was more fitting - she was, after all, a girl ... named Princess. ;-)
